Why Euro Cylinders & Anti-Snap Locks Matter on London Doors
The euro cylinder — that oval-shaped barrel that sits in the centre of most uPVC and composite door locks — is the dominant lock format across London's housing stock. It is elegant and convenient, but the standard, unprotected version has a well-documented weakness: apply sideways force with a basic tool and the cylinder snaps at a sacrificial point, leaving the internal cam exposed and the door free to open. This is not a theoretical risk. Insurance industry data and Metropolitan Police crime reports both highlight lock snapping as a primary method of forced entry in inner London postcodes, including those covering Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. If your front door has a euro cylinder and you cannot see the words 'anti-snap' or a star rating stamped on it, there is a reasonable chance it offers little resistance to a determined intruder.
A TS007 3-star cylinder — the highest rating under the British Standard TS007 — is engineered specifically to defeat this attack. The cylinder body incorporates a sacrificial section that breaks away deliberately, but in doing so it separates cleanly from the internal cam, so the door stays locked even after the exposed section is removed. Additionally, 3-star cylinders resist drilling, picking, and bumping to a standard verified by independent testing. Many home insurers now ask whether your euro cylinder meets TS007 or the equivalent Sold Secure Diamond standard; fitting one can be a condition of a valid claim after a break-in. Our skilled locksmiths carry cylinders in a range of sizes to suit both older uPVC door systems and modern composite doors — we measure and fit on the same visit, so there is no waiting around.
